In 1950, Frank E. Crumley responded to the request of his pastor and founded the first Serra Club in what is now known as the Diocese of Fort Worth. Frank, a local attorney, worked tirelessly to charter the new club, recruit members and lead the important work for vocations as the new club's first president.

In November 1990, shortly after Frank's death, Serra Club of Fort Worth established an award in his memory to honor an outstanding member who merits recognition for outstanding work and for exemplifying the objectives of Serra International, which are:

• To foster and promote vocations to the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church, as a particular vocation to service and to support priests in their sacred ministry;
• Also, to encourage and affirm vocations to consecrated religious life in the Catholic Church;
• Finally, to assist members to recognize and respond in their own lives, to God’s call to holiness in Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit.

The Crumley Award was never intended to be presented annually. It is only awarded when the local Board of Trustees feels an individual merits the recognition.
